Signal Timing and Coordination Studies, TxDOT Fort Worth District
Signal phasing, timing, offset and restriping studies on three TxDOT corridors, using Synchro and drone-observed queues. TxDOT implemented the FM 1187 at I-20 recommendations.

Problem
TxDOT Fort Worth District needed signal phasing, timing and coordination recommendations for intersections on FM 1187, SH 26, SH 10 and SH 183.
My role
Performed traffic signal design and coordination studies for TxDOT under interagency contracts, wrote quarterly progress reports to TxDOT and presented results to TxDOT staff.
Approach
- FM 1187 at I-20: optimized signal phasing, restriping and coordination in Synchro, using queues observed from drone video.
- SH 26 at IH 820 and FM 1938: optimized signal timing and offsets, and co-developed a YOLOv8 computer-vision model to count traffic from video.
- SH 10 and SH 183: modeled 15 signalized intersections and compared coordination alternatives using bandwidth and performance index.
Results
TxDOT implemented the recommendations for FM 1187 at I-20.
On SH 26, the optimized plan reduced the cycle length from 130 to 125 seconds. The YOLOv8 counting model reached 92–99% agreement with manual traffic counts.
